The South Florida Fair

We didn’t get to do too much outside-stuff this weekend.  I spent much of Friday wrapping up things for work, and then on Saturday I spent most of the day actually at work.  Today we made it the entire day without getting called in!  We went to the last day of the South Florida Fair and enjoyed perfect weather.  While this is not a state park, it is certainly a fun, inexpensive, outdoor Florida adventure that involves lots of walking. First, we came to the conclusion that it is much better to hit the fair on the opening day like we have in the past – fewer people, everything is so fresh and clean, AND you get a free pass to come back on another day.  We like to get our tickets ahead of time from Publix – $10 per person instead of $20 at the gate is a great deal!  I think of it as the poor man’s Disney.  You can buy a lot of rides and games at the State Fair for the cost of a single day at Disney world (over $100 just to enter one park for the day!). See a little bit of history here.

For those of you that go for the rides, there are lots of rides from easy floating skyway rides to crazy, spinning rides that launch you upside down and sideways.

For those of you like myself, you might love the fair for the agricultural outreach, environmental educational opportunities, and highlighting the community talents.

I always get excited about the new clubs and meetings I will join.  Last year I joined the Palm Beach Bee Keeping Society and enjoyed a really cool newbee workshop and some really interesting lectures.  Unfortunately, I don’t have enough property to make beekeeping practical yet – one day if we build a deck, I can have a small colony on the balcony.  Maybe this will be the year for the Florida Native Plant Society 🙂

The first two years, the fair was Mardi Gras themed – we took at as a sign that it is ok to live here instead of real Nola.  It’s like the Universe is bringing us a little taste of home.
