A Walrun break after work

Riverbend Park is one of my favorite parks for jogging. There are nice dirt trails (easy on the knees), a variety of environments (grassy, forest, swampy, river-edge, etc), wildlife of all kinds, and plenty of trees to provide shade on hot mornings.  It was also recently listed as one of the top parks in South Florida!

Today I got out of work a little early and had a nice 5-mile walrun on the trails. What is a “walrun”, you ask? Well, I run a little and walk a little the whole time, so it is a walrun. When Jeff and I did our first half marathon at Disney World, we discovered that if we walrun instead of trying to run the whole time, we can go way farther than we would have otherwise. I walran a marathon not long after that!

So much wildlife!

The park doesn’t allow pets and the human visitors are generally peaceful, which means that wildlife is often visible near the trails.  If you get out in the first couple of hours after sunrise, you will almost always encounter one of the deer families.  You can kayak through the waterways to find gators, and go along the horseback riding trails deeper into the park. In the winter time, you will also come across the bald eagle nests and flocks of migrating birds – and the elusive birder with a telephoto lens.

Here are some more pictures from the last couple of years

I have arranged these next photos to take you on a tour around the park along my favorite running path. There are a lot of off-shoots from this loop, but this is my core 4.5 mile trail. Enjoy!
